Product identity

ChatGPT is the assistant product at chatgpt.com. The macOS and other desktop apps are ways to access that product. GPT-4o is a separately documented API model, OpenAI is the company, and Codex is a coding agent with its own task boundary. This record does not combine their features or entitlements.

Best for

Drafting and revising text, explaining material, brainstorming, summarizing supplied information, and iterating on questions when a person can verify important answers. Try a representative, non-sensitive task in the actual account before choosing a plan.

Not ideal for

Decisions that require guaranteed factual accuracy, reproducible source coverage or unsupervised high-stakes judgment. It is also a poor default for confidential material until the intended workspace, retention, training controls and administrator policy have been checked. Repository-scale autonomous software changes belong in a separate Codex evaluation.

Capabilities and limits

OpenAI documents web and desktop access. Depending on plan, account, region, rollout, workspace controls and platform, ChatGPT may provide search, file work, voice, images, data analysis, memory, apps and other tools. None is promised for every account. Outputs can be wrong or incomplete; inspect source material and test task-specific quality. This review read public documentation and did not test a signed-in account.

Plans and account boundary

The public pricing page lists Free and paid personal and organizational plans. Exact prices, model choices, quotas and feature entitlements can change and may differ by region or account. Confirm the live pricing page and the target account before purchasing. A ChatGPT subscription must not be treated as an API credit or as a guarantee of a particular model, connector or usage limit.

Data controls

For personal ChatGPT use, the official Data controls page describes the Improve the model for everyone setting; a signed-in setting applies across that account's devices, and turning it off leaves saved chats in history. OpenAI describes Business, Enterprise and Edu inputs and outputs as not used for training by default. These statements do not establish every organization's retention, connector or administrator settings. Check the exact workspace and any contract before entering sensitive data. Memory, temporary chats, browser data and training choices are separate controls and should not be conflated.

Check device requirements and account availability there. The macOS client is a platform entry to ChatGPT, not a second assistant tool or a promise that every web feature is present on Mac.
